At-a-glance.

I apologize for the inconvenience, this portfolio is in its final stage of development. In the meantime, you can check out my previous Portfolio 2021 and take a peek at what I've worked on before.

This new Portfolio 2023 will be using better technologies like ReactJS (the most in demand JavaScript library for building User Interfaces, created by Facebook's developers team) and NextJS (the React framework for the Web, used by some of the world's largest companies) and I will be able to structure my Case Studies better.

I'm also finally and currently showcasing my latest User Experience (UX) & Product Design real client's project which I worked on at an in-person 3 months duration Product Design inc. UX & UI. course that I enrolled at the Experience Haus, London, United Kingdom from October 2022 to February 2023.

Launching tonight:
—07.17.2023

My name is Simón Calle Laverde and I am a UX, UI, & Product Designer with experience in Front-end Development as well. While taking a course in Web Design and Design for Mobile Devices which I enrolled over 9 years ago in 2013, I found myself in love with all the stages of developing digital products and digital experiences.

I came from a creative career background that its main focus is in persuasion and human behaviour where its studies included subjects like: history of design, graphic design, visual semiotics, linguistics, psychology, sociology, human studies, and many more.

I took a bit creating this newest Portfolio 2023 which is using advanced technologies such as ReactJS, a highly sought-after JavaScript library for building user interfaces developed by the team on Facebook. I incorporated NextJS, a ReactJS framework for production widely utilized by some of the world's leading companies.

I am also finally excited to present my latest User Experience (UX), User Interface (UI), and Product Design project, which I developed for a real client during a three-month in-person Product Design inc. UX & UI course that I enrolled at Experience Haus, London, United Kingdom from October 2022 to February 2023.

I graduated from university as a creative Publicist (2013) and I became a Web Designer (2013) in a separate continuing education university course, learning from professionals to properly design for all rising devices where we studied tens of amazing responsive UI designs.

I learned some HTML, CSS, and JS and I was then gradually made Front-end Developer (2014) as I felt in love with coding my own projects and ideas.

I then worked hybrid and finally remotely for an international digital agency based in Melbourne, Australia, for over 4 years (2015-2019) helping them bring digital experiences to life as well as creating the mobile, tablet, and the iterations for different devices. I also sometimes had meetings with the clients or their team, had consultations, or had to align expectations between design and development, specially with clients that were in my time-zone, to help guide the final project changes or feature additions towards a functional UI including most of the final client's needs and feedback changes. I also learned to develop and design for accesibility, with real scenarios and different requirements.

I was then more officially made UI Designer (since 2019) working in some freelance projects and creating some designs. I studied UI design and all types of web best practices for 2 years, working also in some SEO and some social-media projects.

Finally made UX Designer (since 2022-2023) when I travelled to London, UK, to enrol in an in-person course taken at Experience Haus, where I collaborated with real teammates, working for individual real clients, in a dynamic agency-type environment.

I'm a UX/UI Designer & Front-end Developer with 6 years spent in the industry, I also have a background in Marketing & Advertising with a bachelor's degree as a Publicist.

I worked for over 4 years for a 5 star rated international digital agency based in Australia: Code Nation Australia, 2 years hybrid and later 2 years remote from the commodity of my beautiful country Colombia, and sometimes meeting together here or there.

I want to primarily pursue web/app UI design projects with a focus in delivering good design and a good user experience, without ever forgetting the business goals as a first priority, where I can apply my knowledge in product design, UX research, UX design, UI design, design history and graphic design, branding, visual semiotics, linguistics, psychology, sociology, as well as responsive and accessible front-end development and UI best practices to create impactful digital products for growing organizations and companies providing them with high value.

I'm a Product Designer (UX/UI) & Front-end Developer with 6 years spent in the industry helping bring digital experiences to life. I also have a background in Marketing & Advertising obtaining a bachelor's degree as a Publicist after having undertaken a 5 year creative and design driven career.

After enrolling in a Web Design and Design for Mobile Devices continuing education program course in 2013 in another university, I then worked for over 4 years for a 5 star rated international digital agency based in Australia: Code Nation Australia helping them bring digital products life for their clients, 2 years hybrid and later 2 years remote from the comfort of my beautiful country Colombia, and sometimes meeting together in Colombia or Australia.

I also then had a few entrepreneurship projects as well as trying to build my own path as an independent; I've done real work in front-end, UI, UX, SEO, digital marketing, photography, and print. I recently completed in 2023 a in-person Product Design (including UX & UI) three-month intensive course at Experience Haus, London, UK.

In 2024 I would like to primarily pursue web & app UI design projects with a focus in delivering good design and a good user experience, placing the business goals as a first priority, where I can apply my knowledge in product design, UX research, UX design, UI design, design history, graphic design, visual semiotics, linguistics, psychology of persuasion, sociology, brand positioning, art direction, as well as responsive and accessible web design and development, following UI best practices to create impactful digital products for growing organizations and companies providing them with high value.

A little bit about me.

I'm a Digital Product Designer & Web Designer with experience in UX, UI, & Front-end Development.

With a title as a creative and classic Publicist, I studied Web Design & Design For Mobile Devices {i.e. Responsive Web Design} in 2013 after graduating from my 5 year persuation-driven, conceptual-driven, and design-driven career.

At-the-time I wanted to bring my high-level knowledge in graphic design, history of design, semiotics, linguistics, art direction, psychology and persuation, sociology, brand positioning, branding and identity, marketing, campaigning, among other subjects of my expertise that I studied in a daily basis for over 5 years, to modern digital products and experiences—I even wanted to bring my knowledge in photography to digital media, which I studied in a weekly course for 6 entire years of my early life, plus I worked in a photography studio as well.

In 2015 I started working for an Australian based digital-agency where I worked for 4+ years helping bring websites, platforms, and digital products to life. Most of them were campaign-driven websites, some with millions of live members and users.

Skill Set

Product Design Including UX & UI

Discovery and research
I can conduct user research, competitor analysis, stakeholder research and interviews, create affinity maps to synthesize information, and gather other valuable insights during this phase of digital product design.

Defining the users and the client needs
If the project requires I can create personas based on user surveys and user interviews to illustrate our target audiences and users as well as define our upcoming processes to get to know them better. I can realize a broader empathy mapping exercise/graph based on our personas, on our qualitative responses, and on our more general quantitative information about them. I can then create task analysis, experience maps (user/customer journey maps), and/or even user stories.

Problem statement and ideation
I am skilled in defining a clear problem statement, then ideating or creating an ideation/brainstorming session to generate ideas, then developing effective solutions to it.

Developing a solution
I have the ability to then generate a concise information architecture for the project to come, possibly accompanied with storyboards, user flows, and other relevant components like wireframing, designing, and prototyping.

Wireframing and designing
Depending on the project I can also create low-fidelity wireframing to invision an idea (on paper, Figma, or Adobe XD), then iterate and create mid-fidelity wireframes or a mid-fidelity design (in Figma or Adobe XD), or jump directly to a high-fidelity design (in Figma or Adobe XD), to then continue with a functional prototype.

Prototyping
With my creative background and over 9 years in the industry learning UI design, responsive design, web best practices in both design and development, and even hands-on coding by passion, having insight on real users and clients for whom I worked in over 30 to 40 real and live projects, and additionally having completed in 2023 a Product Design inc. UX & UI. three-months in-person course that I enrolled at Experience Haus, London, UK, I am able to design functional high-fidelity prototypes (in Figma or Adobe XD) for digital products.

User testing
I can then conduct user testing utilizing a prototype; this could also be done in earlier stages like the wireframing phase, or it can be done for a specific user flow in a specific situation or for a specific feature. This will allow us to gather real users feedback and re-iterate in the product while keeping in mind our users voices. UX design is the way to stand in behalf of our users voice, in a balance with our stakeholder interests and needs.

Software And Applications

Figma
I had previous Figma knowledge since 2019, but during 2022 - 2023 I used this interactive product design software extensively in collaboration with other 7 teamates at Experience Haus, London, UK, while working in a real UX and UI client project as well as learning Figma and FigJam.

FigJam
I also learned FigJam which is mostly a collaboration tool, a UX design ideation dashboard, and a whiteboarding software. I had the chance to use the remote-team working features for both Figma and FigJam in real collaborative scenarios.

Adobe XD
Adobe XD was the primary tool that I have used to design UI since 2019. After my travel to the UK in 2022 - 2023 where I enrolled a Product Design inc. UX & UI. course, I switched to Figma which I found to be a more accurate, flexible, and powerful tool for designing and prototyping. Adobe XD is also not a standalone app anymore.

Adobe Illustrator
Illustrator is a vector graphics and design software that I have used extensively from the beginning of my career in 2008 to create logos, posters, ads, brochures/flyers, business cards, and all types of vector based graphic designs.

Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is a complimentary image editor & design tool intended to be used in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator and other apps. Adobe Illustrator is object based while Adobe Photoshop is image based. I used this program extensively especially at university. I also took an elective course in traditional and digital photography for over 5 years while I was at school, and I then worked as my first job in a photography studio where I also learned and used Adobe Photoshop more in depth in a professional environment. I created a monograph project for school graduation in the subject of Photography for Advertising, so I learned a lot of photo edition. This work also led me to choose my university career.

Styling, Markup, Interaction, & UI Frameworks

CSS3, SCSS, & SASS Styling
CSS is an easy to learn, but hard to master styling language that I have 7 years of experience with. I have experience working with vanilla CSS and especially with CSS preprocessor languages like SCSS or SASS. I love CSS, it is what I'm most skilled at within languages, and I love the real-life challenges while styling real and live User Interfaces getting them to pixel-perfect but 100% responsive designs.

HTML5 & JSX Markup
I have over 7 years of experience working with this markup language and I have worked and collaborated on at least 30 to 40 web projects using HTML5. I love using good HTML semantics, coherent, organized, and hierarchical markup code. I also have years of experience, knowledge, insights, and hands-on best practices of good accessibility in terms of both design and code (not only considering colors, contrast, fonts, and more as most of designers will do, but also considering all types of other scenarios and devices like screen-readers). I know how accesibility for all of these different devices and screens should really be applied and optimized.

JavaScript ES6 Programming / Interaction / Interactivity
I have implemented some JavaScript for simple interactions in most of the 30 to 40 sites I have worked on. I can also implement more complex JS interactions like the ones in every page of my Portfolio 2021 and my other recent projects. I'm not a JavaScript developer, neither I have a computer science degree–I'm instead a creative person, but I can follow and search documentation very well, understand and modify JavaScript examples and tutorials, and create almost anything I need, without a real programming background. I have 5 plus years or real-life scenario work. But additionally, in 2021 I focused various consequent months only to improve and cement my vanilla JavaScript, and I have continued to learn and being up to date since. My main goal was to have a stronger base and then a smoother transition to ReactJS.

ReactJS JavaScript Library for Building User Interfaces
A recent personal goal was to become proficient at ReactJS and its stack. Using NextJS, GatsbyJS, and React Native was my short term goal. In 2021 I took some courses and I learned a good bunch of legacy React. I worked in some small features, projects, and apps using pure vanilla client-side ReactJS, then I switched to NextJS. I have some of these in my GitHub.

NextJS The React Framework for the Web
I was learning NextJS (a ReactJS framework) in 2022 even before it was becoming very, very popular, to be able to take advantage of its server-side rendering, static site generation, incremental static regeneration, and many more capabilities of NextJS (using ReactJS in its core), in addition to React's default client-side rendering. I recently finished building my newest Portfolio 2023 using NextJS.

Liquid Code Liquid Template Language Created by Shopify
I worked for at least 5 years using Liquid Code as a contractor, an employee, and an independent. It can be used to create dynamic and editable websites and apps. It pulls, loops, and interacts with dynamic content from data bases or content management systems. It iterates through data, allows for conditionals and logic, and renders static HTML from dynamic and ever changing sources.
